Domaine Guiberteau - the best Terroir in the Loire.

New Fine Wine

The great regions of France are so often in the press, that one would be forgiven that little else exists outside Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Rhone and Champagne. Increasingly, as prices continue to climb in those regions - merchants and drinkers alike are looking to the smaller, traditionally less well marketed regions that are making some of the most exciting wines in the market today. A rising younger generation, bringing modern techniques and investment to areas like the Loire, Beaujolais, the Jura and Languedoc-Roussillon are starting to build fantastic reputations for brilliant value and very fine wines.

Domaine Guiberteau in Saumur is just one such estate, increasingly it is found served at Napa Valley estate lunches and Michelin starred restaurants in New York.

The Domaine started out life in the early 1900’s with Clément Manguin buying a small selection of vineyards around Breze. However, it wasn’t until 1996 when Clements Gransdson - Romain Guiberteau took over the Domaine, that it started to become well known. Under the tutelage of Clos Rougeard’s Dani Foucault Romain made 5000 bottles in his first vintage which sold so quickly, he was easily convinced to get back more of the vineyards that had been farmed out to the local cooperative.

Today the 9 hectares is just about 50/50 Chenin Blanc to Cabernet Franc and mostly situated on the hill of Breze itself. In 2003 Romain turned the vineyards organic and was given certification from the 2007 vintage. In a very short pace of time, Domaine Guiberteau has become one of the most sought after domaines in Saumur, their wines already strictly allocated and found in the best restaurants in France.

The wines are often described as profound and brilliantly mineral, they are near perfect examples of Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc and at their best we think are probably the best value for money wines on the market. The entry level Saumur blanc and rouge are under £20 on the table and utterly delicious to drink now.
