Elegant and stylish wines from Nuits St Georges

Domaine Jean Chauvenet has its roots firmly in the heart of Burgundy, in Nuits Saint Georges. A small family farm, the estate now operates around ten prestigious appellations from the Côte de Nuits.

In 1964, Jean Chauvenet became part of his family's wine-making traditions, taking over the land passed down to him by his father and founding the estate. Since then, vintage after vintage, the estate has sought to transcribe the purest expression of the terroirs of their vineyards.

Christine and Christophe have been at the head of the family estate since 1994, working the vines and soils of their Pinot Noir plots with one rule: respect for the identity of the terroir.

The Jean Chauvenet domaine is a perfect example of the Burgundian family-run holding: restricted area (10 hectares); numerous appellations (9 in this case) from among the best-known of the Côte de Nuits; and a single grape variety, the Pinot Noir. Together these make for red wines of incomparable texture, delicate and silky.

The domaine is run by Christophe Drag and his wife Christine who work to a single golden rule: respect for the expression of each terroir to yield a range of different wines.

Since 1994 the domaine has turned to low-input  cultivation which aims to minimise the use of chemical treatments, and is working towards certification.

Since 2003 the vines have been grassed-down. The aim is to limit soil-erosion and temper the soil's natural vigour in the interests of restricted yield. Christophe Drag also practices rigorous disbudding which leads to better aeration of the grapebunches and hence a healthier crop come harvest-time.

Picking is done by hand, the date depending on the grapes being fully ripe as regards phenols and tannins. In this way wines from the Jean Chauvenet domaine develop the delicacy and elegance which are the hallmark of fine wines, and the structure which presages long keeping qualities.
