      Pomerol

Pomerol is the smallest of the major Bordeaux appellations and it is a part of the region more akin to Burgundy than Bordeaux. Pomerol is home to much smaller scale properties that produce 1000’s of cases rather than the tens of thousands of cases that the Medoc Chateaux bottle. As in St Emilion, Merlot dominates the plantings. The best properties have vines on the plateau; deep clay offers the best conditions for Merlot and as the plateau gently slopes, the wines become lighter and fresher. The top properties of Pomerol are amongst the hardest to source and most expensive wine in not only Bordeaux, but the world. Le Pin, Lafleur, Petrus are easily the most well-known, with Vieux Chateau Certan and L’Eglise Clinet close behind. The reputations and prices were built by Jean-Pierre Moueix in the mid-20th century and now Pomerol estates offer some of finest examples of Bordeaux on the market.
