Diego Conterno

Stefano Conterno is a grower that we have been lucky enough to work with for a number of vintages now, welcoming him to London last year to have dinner with Seckford customers. One of a new breed of Barolo winemakers, making classical Monforte Barolo from superb Terroirs. They make two wines - a village Barolo and a Barolo from the ‘Grand Cru’ vineyard of Ginestra and since 2010 the estate has been wholly organic - labelled thus from the 2014 vintage.

At Seckford, we love the wines Diego and son Stefano are making at this up and coming estate and finally the critics are starting to see the quality in the wines too. Antonio Galloni first visited the estate last year to taste the 2014’s and 2015’s he says of the estate ‘Diego Conterno set up shop under his own name with a collection of top-notch vineyards when he split off from Conterno-Fantino in 2000. Conterno and his son, Stefano, craft nuanced, classically inspired wines of real character’

Awarding scores of 91+ and 92 for the 2014’s is an utter triumph and with the prices so reasonable for these Baroli, we cannot recommend them highly enough.

Please do let me know if you would like a case or two secured.

2014 Barolo, Diego Conterno - £145 per six bottles IB.
92 Points (Antonio Galloni, Vinous)
The 201 Barolo is a gorgeous wine that will delight readers who enjoy classically built Barolos. Pliant and expressive, with striking aromatic presence, the 2014 is singing today. Spice, orange peel, new leather, flowers and sweet tobacco all grace this very pretty and exquisitely beautiful Barolo from Conterno.

2014 Barolo, Ginestra, Diego Conterno - £187 per six bottles IB.
91+ Points (Antonio Galloni, Vinous)
The 2014 Barolo Ginestra offers a bit more depth and overall structure than the straight Barolo, even if it remains a bit rough around the edges. The 2014 may not have enough fruit to drink well for more than a handful of years, although it is quite expressive and intriguing today. On the other hand, if the tannins soften, the 2014 could turn out to be even better than this note suggests.
