Vinous Neal Martin - 18 Aug 22
The 1959 Climens is lighter than other Sauternes that I have encountered from this vintage. The nose is a touch ephemeral, with light peach and citrus aromas, a hint of lime and wild honey. The palate is much better with a surprising sharpness given the vintage in question, yet there is a sense of mineralité and poise, less residual sugar than you would expect with a tang of stem ginger on the aftertaste. Tasted November 2009 at the Château Climens vertical in Zurich.

Bordeaux

Red Bordeaux, globally renowned, is crafted in France’s Bordeaux region from grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. These full-bodied wines feature dark fruit flavours, earthy and spicy notes, and often benefit from ageing. Top producers include Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Lafite Rothschild. White Bordeaux, made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, offers styles from crisp to rich, with citrus and tropical notes. Sweet Bordeaux wines, like Sauternes, are famed for their rich sweetness and flavours of apricot and honey, with Château d’Yquem as a leading producer.
