Le Carre was purchased from Canon in around 2000 and adjoins Clos Fourtet. The 2018 Le Carre is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it shoots from the glass with notes of kirsch, dark chocolate, and potpourri with suggestions of unsmoked cigars, menthol, and dusty earth. Full-bodied, rich, and well poised in the mouth, the palate has beautifully rounded tannins and a lively line, lifting the long, fragrant finish.

The 2018 Le Carré still has a captivating floral bouquet of iris and violet aromas on the delineated nose, all harmonious and very pure. The palate is medium-bodied and very cohesive with a fine bead of acidity. It has developed a subtle citrus element, hints of blood orange emerging toward the finish, and residues of fennel and sage lingering on the aftertaste. This is a very fine Le Carré from Jonathan Maltus that should drink well for 12–15 years. Excellent.

Bordeaux

Red Bordeaux, globally renowned, is crafted in France’s Bordeaux region from grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. These full-bodied wines feature dark fruit flavours, earthy and spicy notes, and often benefit from ageing. Top producers include Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Lafite Rothschild. White Bordeaux, made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, offers styles from crisp to rich, with citrus and tropical notes. Sweet Bordeaux wines, like Sauternes, are famed for their rich sweetness and flavours of apricot and honey, with Château d’Yquem as a leading producer.
