Chateau Le Pape 2019
Bordeaux en primeur
This is the property that is virtually next door to Château Haut-Bailly, and was bought by Robert G. Wilmers in 2012. It is mostly planted to Merlot, whereas Haut-Bailly is mainly planted to Cabernet Sauvignon.
Benefiting from the experience & expertise of Haut-Bailly’s team, the vineyard at Château Le Pape has continued to thrive & build its unique personality vintage after vintage. The wines have gained in depth & length, while retaining their characteristic freshness.
The detailed work of renovating the vineyard - which has been ongoing since 2012 - has once again paid off in this vintage. The wine is more structured & increasingly elegant, with a lovely richness.
The blend of Château Le Pape 2019 "is highlighted by soft & generous Merlots with polished full tannins that offer a beautiful density."

93-94 James Suckling
“…medium to full body, firm & silky tannins and a flavourful finish. One of the most refined Papes.”
92-94 Jeb Dunnuck
“…cassis & black raspberry fruit as well as tobacco & leafy herbs all define the bouquet, and this medium to full-bodied beauty has a plush, mouthfilling texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish….”
“Le Pape's 7th vintage under the Haut-Bailly umbrella, now well and truly into its stride. This is structured & intense and a fresh lift that makes it overall super friendly and inviting…
90-92 Neal Martin, Vinous
“Deep ruby in colour, it has a clean and precise, almost Burgundy-like bouquet with raspberry, wild strawberry and subtle loamy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly creamy-textured opening that belies that structure underneath, then it segues into a distinctly saline finish that gets the saliva flowing. Excellent.”
89-91 Antonio Galloni, Vinous
“The 2019 Le Pape is exquisite. Floral, savoury and blood orange top notes give the 2019 striking freshness to play off the natural radiance of red cherry and raspberry fruit. The balance of richness and vibrancy is compelling. Le Pape has seldom been this seductive. The 2019 is all class.”
