Tasting Notes

Vinous Neal Martin - 01 Jan 19
The 1959 Brane-Cantenac is a vintage that I have not previously tasted. It demonstrates more maturity on the rim compared to the 1961, but the nose retains ample freshness, displaying scents of red fruit, singed leather, damp undergrowth and pressed rose petals. There is perhaps even more vigor here than in its 1961 counterpart. The palate is fresh and lively, with plenty of leathery red fruit, sage, undergrowth and just a touch of mint. Eschewing the opulence that many 1959s demonstrate even in their elder years, this Brane-Cantenac is more classic and austere in style, culminating in quite a long, cedar-infused finish. Tasted at the Brane-Cantenac vertical at the château.
