The 2019 Le Dragon de Quintus has an attractive nose with a fair amount of new oak, creamier in style, but there is substance behind it. The palate is flattering with plush black fruit, lightly spiced, fine depth and cohesion with a dash of black pepper towards the persistent finish. Lovely. You could almost broach this now. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

The tannins and the architecture are powerful, with supple berry fruits and a clear shot of smoked cedar. Closes in tight on the finish.

The 2019 Le Dragon de Quintus is a blend of 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it opens with cedar and tar suggestions over a core of baked plums and fruitcake with a touch of black pepper. The full-bodied palate is chewy and muscular, with an earthy finish.

Bordeaux

Red Bordeaux, globally renowned, is crafted in France’s Bordeaux region from grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. These full-bodied wines feature dark fruit flavours, earthy and spicy notes, and often benefit from ageing. Top producers include Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Lafite Rothschild. White Bordeaux, made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, offers styles from crisp to rich, with citrus and tropical notes. Sweet Bordeaux wines, like Sauternes, are famed for their rich sweetness and flavours of apricot and honey, with Château d’Yquem as a leading producer.
