The Wine Independent Lisa Perrotti-Brown - 09 May 22
The 2017 Les Asteries is a blend of 83% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc from vines planted on shallow clay over limestone. Deep garnet-purple in color, it bursts with open-knit notes of baked plums, blackberry pie, and stewed black cherries with touches of balsamic, olives, and sauteed herbs. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a chewy texture and savory finish.

The 2017 Les Astéries is gorgeous and certainly much more impressive than it was en primeur. The aromatics are really popping, as is the wine's feeling of energy and vibrancy. Dark cherry, plum, chocolate, spice and incense build into the beautifully layered finish. Opulent, dark, potent and rich, the 2017 Les Astéries is one of the more overtly ripe wines in this range.

Bordeaux

Red Bordeaux, globally renowned, is crafted in France’s Bordeaux region from grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. These full-bodied wines feature dark fruit flavours, earthy and spicy notes, and often benefit from ageing. Top producers include Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Lafite Rothschild. White Bordeaux, made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, offers styles from crisp to rich, with citrus and tropical notes. Sweet Bordeaux wines, like Sauternes, are famed for their rich sweetness and flavours of apricot and honey, with Château d’Yquem as a leading producer.
