Inside Bordeaux Jane Anson - 05 Oct 21
An excellent vintage at this St Emilion First Growth, but the main wine is nowhere near ready to approach. I suggest looking instead at the second wine, Le Carillon d'Angélus. Expect stewed spiced plums, raspbery and black cherry fleshy fruits, and a ton of smoked earth, liqourice and slate. Still young at three years old, this will deliver already with a good few hours in a carafe but there is no rush to open. 50% new oak. The first vintage that includes the newly-expanded vineyard footprint, with plots in St Christophe de Bardes and a large area near Cheval Blanc and Figeac.

The 2018 Le Carillon d'Angélus is silky, pliant and wonderfully expressive. Dark red cherry fruit, mocha, cedar and dried flowers all flesh out. The Carillon benefits immensely from air, which really brings out its aromatic presence and layers. Silky tannins wrap around the finish. This is such a pretty wine.

The 2018 Carillon d’Angelus is deep garnet-purple in color. It leaps from the glass with scents of baked black cherries, stewed plums, and mulberries, plus hints of fragrant earth, cinnamon stick, and dried roses. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is firm and chewy with a slightly hard/bitter finish.

Bordeaux

Red Bordeaux, globally renowned, is crafted in France’s Bordeaux region from grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. These full-bodied wines feature dark fruit flavours, earthy and spicy notes, and often benefit from ageing. Top producers include Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Lafite Rothschild. White Bordeaux, made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, offers styles from crisp to rich, with citrus and tropical notes. Sweet Bordeaux wines, like Sauternes, are famed for their rich sweetness and flavours of apricot and honey, with Château d’Yquem as a leading producer.
