Marchesi Antinori
Badia a Passignano 2018
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione

Badia a Passignano Gran Selezione is produced exclusively from the finest Sangiovese grapes harvested from its namesake vineyard in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. The vineyards grow at an altitude of approximately 300 metres above sea level on soils rich in limestone and clay. The wine is aged in the historic cellars under the Badia (abbey) of Passignano that dates back to the 10th century.

Badia a Passignano 2018
£155 per 6x75cl IB

Badia a Passignano 2018 is ruby red in colour. Its complex nose presents intense notes of ripe red fruits - sour and black cherries - that merge with sweet hints of blueberries and apricots. Its bouquet finishes with pleasant balsamic notes, aromatic herbs and toasted aromas of chocolate, coffee, liquorice and vanilla. On the palate it’s rich, mouth filling, succulent and flavourful, yet well sustained by extraordinary freshness and minerality. These characteristics, combined with a sweet aftertaste, give the wine length and a lingering flavour profile. Excellent ageing potential.

93 points - Antonio Galloni (Vinous.com) September 2021
The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano is creamy and sensual from start to finish. In 2018, the Badia shows its typically dark profile but with less heaviness than has been present in some previous vintages. Silky and supple, the 2018 has a ton to offer. Drink: 2023 - 2033

17 points - Jancis Robinson (JancisRobinson.com) May 2021
San Casciano in Val di Pesa. 100% Sangiovese. Each vineyard parcel was kept as a separate lot throughout fermentation and ageing. A 10-day alcoholic fermentation was followed by an additional period of 10–12 days of maceration. The wine was racked, still separated by vineyard of origin, and transferred to Hungarian oak barrels with a small percentage going into French oak barrels, where malo took place. Blending just before bottling.

High alcohol! But it's remarkably well hidden with freshness being the overriding characteristic of this wine. Very much a Sangiovese with real grip and no shortage of vibrant fruit. Clean finish. Quite remarkable! Drink: 2022 - 2030

The Antinori Family:
The Antinori family has been committed to the art of winemaking for over six centuries since 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member, of the “Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri”, the Florentine Winemakers’ Guild.

Throughout its twenty-six generation long history, the Antinori family has managed the business directly making innovative and sometimes bold decisions, while upholding the utmost respect for traditions and the environment..

Each vintage, each plot of land, each new idea to be advanced is a new beginning, a new pursuit for achieving higher quality standards. As Marchese Piero loves to say: “Ancient family roots play an important part in our philosophy but they have never hindered our innovative spirit”.

Marchesi Antinori’s passion for viticulture is expressed through perseverance: their continuous pursuit for quality improvement, even in the smallest details. Research and development is an ongoing process both in the vineyards and in the cellars: selecting new clones of local and international varieties: experimenting with new techniques in the vineyards and vineyard altitudes, new approaches to fermentation and temperature control, experimenting with both traditional and innovative winemaking philosophies, using new types of oak for barrels, barrel size and age, and varying length of aging in the bottle before commercial release.

The estate’s historical importance in the Chianti region is well documented in hundreds of volumes that are kept in the Florence State Archives, that provide descriptions and details about the Sangiovese vineyards and local crops over the centuries.

Further proof of this came to light in 1983 when a thousand year old vitis vinifera plant was discovered on the land surrounding Badia a Passignano.

Piero Antinori:
“We have demonstrated, over the years, that in Tuscany and in Umbria there was the possibility of producing excellent wines, widely recognized at an international level, which showed both elegance and finesse while maintaining their original character. Our library contains many volumes, but for us it is not rich enough. We have a mission that has not yet been entirely carried out, something that drives us to express the vast potential of our vineyards and to reconcile new discoveries yet to be disclosed with the patrimony of Tuscan style. A patrimony which includes tradition, culture, agriculture, art, and literature all of which represents the identity of the Marchesi Antinori company. One of our main strengths is the fact that we are Tuscan or, if you prefer, our fundamentally Tuscan character”.
