Dugat-Py, under the stewardship of Bernard Dugat, has seen its stock rise considerably in the past decade. Today it is under the control of his son Loic, and that trend is continuing. The domaine has 5 hectares of Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards.
As with many of the new generation of producers, the success of their wines is born out of meticulous work in the vineyards. All Dugat’s cutting is by hand; ploughing by horse; and replanting of vines from their own stock.
The domaine has a very interesting set of cuvees that sit alongside the traditional Village, Premier & Grand Cru wines. The entry level includes the Cuvee Halinard from declassified Gevrey Chambertin fruit and is 100% organic. The cuvee ages in oak for 18 months and is bottled unfiltered - this gives the wine a real pedigree. At the next step we have Gevrey Coueur de Roy which is made from very old vines, some 100+ years. It is aged in 80% new oak, and again it is bottled unfiltered.

Richer and more gourmand than Les Evocelles, the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur du Roy wafts from the glass with a deep-pitched bouquet of cassis, blackberries, grilled meats, rose petals, espresso roast and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a deep, fleshy core of intensely concentrated old vine fruit that largely conceals its fine structuring tannins, underpinned by succulent acids and concluding with a long, palate-staining finish. If Les Evocelles offers a more tensile, mineral expression of the appellation, the Coeur du Roy is the stereotypical Gevrey in all its glory.

When buying the domaine’s Premier & Grand Crus I am always struck by the minuscule quantities made – sadly only a few hundred cases each year, which makes this collection very exciting indeed.
The wines are made with as little intervention as possible, and after time in barrel (all new oak) they are bottled unfined & unfiltered.
The Premier & Grand Cru wines come predominantly from vines over 50 years old. The term 'Tres Vieilles Vignes' is added to the Chambertin, because here the vines are over 90 years old.

Unlike the Charmes-Chambertin, the 2016 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru was a normal crop since it was unaffected by frost. This vintage includes 80 to 90% whole-cluster fruit. It has a majestic bouquet with bold black cherry and blueberry fruit, superb delineation and it conveys an almost infectious sense of energy. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin but there is that arching, cathedral-like structure one looks for in a Mazoyères. It gently grips the mouth, a little chalkiness coming though on the sorbet-fresh finish. Outstanding.
