Domaine de l'Iserand
Fantastic Rhone Reds from Jean-Francois Malsert

Fresh & intense, and really drinkable.

These are not expensive wines but are made with real authenticity & care in tiny quantities - some 200 cases per cuvee.

With the recent dip in temperature, we thought these would be the perfect wines to open on a chilly evening!

Domaine de l'Iserand is a relatively new domaine run by Jean-Francois Malsert, who used to be patron of the lively Carafe aux Folies wine bar in Tournon. He now has four hectares in Ozon, Arras and Sécheras; the base of them are his grandfather's old abandoned vineyards that have never been sprayed with chemicals.

His grandfather grew grapes to eat & sell, but the vines were grubbed up by his father. Jean-Francois started re-planting vines on his grandfather’s land in 2007, always respecting each site or vineyard with the same colour of grapes, if not always the same varieties.

Jean-Francois sold the wine bar and became a full-time vigneron in 2017. He grows Syrah, Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier & Gamay, and buys some grapes from the local farmers he knows who allow him to dictate the nurture, vine training and crop levels. Organic, low sulphur, whole bunch wine-making and minimal interference. He uses amphorae and old demi-muids for ageing.

He experiments with his wines, using combinations of barrel & amphora - our recent tasting notes were littered with the words balance, vibrant, fragrant & delicious.

3 Stars - John Livingstone-Learmonth (DrinkRhone.com)
(amphore, bottling Apr 2020) red robe; cherry-strawberry aroma in a loose, peppy bouquet. The palate serves sweet-noted red fruit, has sound length, roundness, drinks easily. The fruit is bright enough. This is 50-50 Grenache-Gamay, instead of last year’s 85-15 – “the 2019 Grenache was too heady and needed reining back”, J-F Malsert. To 2022 Feb 2020

Vin de France La Maquerelle Syrah, 2019
6 x 75cl - £75 IB
£106 incl. VAT & Duty

Syrah (1974, 1976) from 2 plots on decomposed granite soils at Ozon, purchased harvest from a young man, 7-8 day whole bunch vinification, wild yeasts, soft cap punching, 1 pumping over, lined concrete vat raised 7 & 12 months, zero added SO2, unfined, unfiltered, usually all bottled April, 2019 an exception due to slow sales so 33% bottled April 2020, 67% Sept 2020, first year 2019, 6,000 b

3.5 Stars - John Livingstone-Learmonth (DrinkRhone.com)
(vat) dark red; grilled notes on the nose, compact style, near dense red cherry fruit, raspberry the sidekick. The palate gives cool toned red fruit, takes a peppery trail, has fresh sides, character, will do well. It’s aided by the age of the vines. The fruit lasts nicely. 8,000 b. 2025-26 Feb 2020

Vin de France Syrah Clos des Vaches, 2019
6 x 75cl - £85 IB
£118 incl. VAT & Duty

100% Syrah from Sécheras, whole bunch 7 day steel vat vinification, 1 cap punching, wild yeasts, 2019 raised 9+year 600-litre oak casks 6 months, unfined, unfiltered, 2,000 b

3.5 Stars - John Livingstone-Learmonth (DrinkRhone.com)
dark red; smoke, cordite airs hover over cassis-blue fruit in the nose, which is nice and thorough. The palate attacks on dark berries, with drive from half way, munchy and layered tannins on board. A pocket of late iron works well. From late 2020. To 2024 Feb 2020

Saint Joseph Lou Taissou, 2019

100% Syrah from granite & mica-schist soils at Sécheras (33%, 2011) & decomposed granite with loess & hard granite soils at Ozon (67%, 2001, southern sector), vineyards at Arras to come on stream, 2-3 week vinification, 75-100% whole bunch, raised used 70% 600-litre oak casks & 30% Spanish amphores 15-18 months, first wine 2015 (1,500 b), 2,400-3,500 b

4 Stars - John Livingstone-Learmonth (DrinkRhone.com)
dark red; has a ripe, curvy nose based on black fruit, blackberry on wheels, liqueur de Dijon. The palate is aromatic, bears black fruits that gleam, a real tasty display with enjoyable tannins. This gives lots of pleasure, is a St Jo of energy, flavour, the tannins largely inside, so it’s OK to drink now. 2025-26 Feb 2020
