Roda I Reserva 2015

Rioja ~ Spain

Seckford is delighted to inform you about the new release from Roda I - 2015 is a year of perfect maturation and great wines.

The focus of this modern-style Rioja is old bush vine Tempranillo (older than 30 years). Roda also differentiates between wines with a predominantly red-fruit character (labelled as Roda) and those with more balsamic black-fruit character, which are released as Roda I. This is a stylistic choice on the part of the winery, with the goal being to create two different interpretations of Rioja.

Winemaker Agustin Santolaya separates vintages into “Mediterranean” and “Atlantic”, depending on the season’s influence. The 2015 is the former: warm, generous & perfumed, the acidity fresh and the tannins delicate, giving a concentrated finish. It is ready to enjoy now but it will continue to mature.

"97% Tempranillo & 3% Graciano. Fermentation in French oak vats and aged in French oak barriques for 16 months (50% new and 50% second use). Healthy dark, shaded garnet. Rich, sweet, compact nose. Then admirably savoury, pure Tempranillo notes on the finish. Clearly very ambitious, as the price indicates, in the modern idiom but not too overdone. Refreshing finish after the velvety ripe start. Long and neat. Pretty impressive.17.5 points JancisRobinson.com

Roda I Reserva 2015

"From a warm vintage with an early harvest, this is a well-balanced Rioja with considerable complexity. There's a ripe plum character to the black fruit aromas, along with warm tobacco hints and earthy, undergrowth notes. Like a perfectly stretched tapestry, this shows a taut precision to the winemaking, with admirable balance. Polished black fruit, spice and chocolate notes show good persistence. A sense of freshness and fine tannins with juicy grip on the finish; this has life ahead of it." 95 points Decanter.com
